India: Caves, Caves, and More Caves in Ajanta and Ellora

17 Feb
Back in December, we took a few days to go to the famous Ajanta and Ellora caves in Maharastra (the same state Mumbai is in, about 6 hours away). Unfortunately, in order to visit the caves the best place to stay is in the city of Aurangabad, which is really not a very nice place. There are very few good hotel options and it seemed that the few affordable places with good reviews were booked so we ended up in a pretty depressing place (this was after we switched hotels) near the local cinema.

The first day we headed out to Ajanta, which is the farther of the two, about 2 hours outside of Aurangabad. Ajanta is a group of 29 Buddhist caves built in 200 and 600 BCE. They were accidentally rediscovered in 1819 by British officer who was hunting a tiger (ah, those were the days). They are pretty much all in a row, and some are more impressive than others, with large Buddhas and stupas inside. My favorite was the one with giant reclining Buddha on one side.

The second day we decided to do a kind of package deal where a driver took us to the Ellora caves first, and then a few other small sites. We ended up in a van with an Indian family–parents and a son who was around 10. We felt bad for intruding on their family vacation, but they were very nice and friendly, offering to explain several things to us.

Ellora has 34 caves built between 500 and 1000 BCE, and they are varying religious origins: Hindu, Jain, and Buddhist, and they are more spread out.

After seeing a few of the Jain caves, we went to Ellora’s main attraction: the Kailasa Temple. It’s actually not really a cave in the traditional sense and was in fact carved out of one single rock, starting from the top and working their way down–it is even multi-storied. This is extremely impressive when you see just how enormous Kailasa is (according to Wikipedia it is double the size of the Parthenon). We decided to get a guide to show us around and gain some insight into the various carvings. Our guide was an older gentleman who used to be a teacher, which became quite obvious when he scolded us for not paying attention or standing in the wrong place! But he was very knowledgable and we learned a lot about the Indu gods and their marriages.

After Ellora the driver took us on a whirlwind tour of Aurangabad’s other offerings, which include a special kind of weaving (both paithani and himroo). We saw some beautiful hand-woven textiles, but they were all above our price range. Next, we went to the Ghrishneshwar Temple. We wouldn’t have been necessarily interested in this temple, but the Indian family was quite excited to visit and explained to us that it was there because it is believed that when Shiva destroyed Jyotirlinga he divided her into 12 pieces that dropped to the earth and this temple is one of 12 in the world where a piece of her is believed to have fallen. The most fascinating part of it all for us was that the men had to remove their shirts (still not sure why!) as they walked in to the inner part of the temple. So Manor joined the gaggle of Indians, along with the father and son from our tour and removed his shirt to walk through.

Random cow churning…butter?

Next we went to the Daulatabad Fort, a gorgeous old fort atop a mountain. It was great fun to explore; there is even a secret underground passage, but it was full of bats so we stayed out! There were tons of schoolchildren around and we soon learned that before Christmas vacation all the school take the kids on field trips. We got a lot of photo requests from giggly young school girls and boys…

…who seemed to follow us to Aurangabad’s big attraction: the Mini Taj aka Bibi-ka-Maqbara, the burial place of Aurangzeb’s wife, Rabia-ud-Durrani. It is an imitation of the Taj, hence the title Mini Taj. It’s lovely, but after seeing the actual Taj, I can say it’s not that exciting.

People dropped coins down onto the tomb.

We got back to our hotel around 7 pm and had a lot of time to kill before our midnight train. After dinner we decided to see a movie at the local cinema, which turned out to be the latest Mission Impossible movie. In Hindi. We actually had virtually no problem following the simple plot and had a lot of fun as the crowd of young Indian men hooted and hollered at various times. It was also fun watching Hindi words come out of Tom Cruise’s mouth!

DEAR HIMYM: IT’S NOT ME, IT’S YOU

17 Feb

Dear Barney, Robin, Lily, Marshall & Ted:

You used to make me laugh every week. We had some great moments, you and me. Those times I almost peed my pants. The episodes I watched over and over again. The Pineapple, the Duel, the Slutty Pumpkin, the Goat… Sandcastles in the Sand and Let’s Go to the Mall had me rolling on the floor. All the hints and flash forwards kept me interested, trying to figure out if we had met the mother yet and who she could be. Every week I would be so excited for the new episode. And then you started changing on me.

The focus shifted. It was no longer about Ted. And frankly, that was okay. Lily, Marshall, Barney & Robin had become more interesting. Ted, you started getting on my nerves. This break up is mostly your fault. You can’t complain about how you want to get married, and yet constantly go out to pick up chicks with Barney and go on dates with crazy women that we never even see, or women like Zoey who are completely and obviously wrong for you. You don’t want to get married or be happy. At this point, you are just a self-sabotaging tool.

There’s always a lead up to every break up. This has been coming since Robin & Barney broke up. And this past Monday was the last straw. You managed to make me laugh a few times, and things did happen in the show, which was a welcome change. However, everything that happened made me go “What the eff?!” I’m sorry Kumar, but you and Robin have no chemistry. Her life long aversion to marriage and recent struggle with the fact that she can’t have children cannot be cured by you. You’re nice and all, but no. I don’t believe that she would 1) want to marry you and 2) love you enough to want you to find true happiness with someone else.

Barney cannot fall in love with a stripper. I believe that he actually wants a relationship, but not with a stripper. Plus she’s too smart to be a stripper. No offense to strippers. And he’s supposed to end up with Robin. Which brings me to the big reason why I am leaving you…

Mere moments before we find Ted & Robin on the roof, I said to the Hubbster: “You know, they had that episode with Victoria where she told Ted that Robin was his problem, and then they never did anything with it.” That’s when you chose to do something. And that something was so stupid. We’ve been here with Ted & Robin. They dated. They broke up. They have even relapsed. He has been over her for a long time. Or so I thought. If he is still “in love with her” after 7 years and numerous other relationships (including Barney & Robin, who are completely meant to be), how is he supposed to get his shit together for the mother? Tell me that, Carter Bays & Craig Thomas. You told us in the FIRST EPISODE that Robin was not the mother. Remember that? “That’s how I met your Aunt Robin.”

Why are you taking us down this road again?! I can’t do it. I cannot follow you there. So this is it for us. Maybe after some time has passed, if I hear you are doing well, we can sit down over coffee and have a talk about how you’ve grown as a show and why I should take you back. But for now, this is me saying goodbye. It’s been real.

Love,

Jenny

17 Feb

The carrier-locked iPhones became a much lesser problem since the iPhone hit most of the major carriers worldwide. But there are those people who still buy foreign carrier-locked iPhone for various reasons. so a tool like this would be very useful.

GPP unlock SIM

The GPP SIM tool reportedly unlocks successfully every AT&T-bound iPhone 4S as well as the Japan KDDI and Softbank iPhone 4S. As with similar solutions such as Gevey and RebelSIM, you just put your SIM along with the insert into the provided SIM tray and insert the lot into the iPhone.

According to the GPP Team, the GPP SIM unlocks every AT&T iPhone 4S phones running iOS 5.0 and iOS 5.01 no jailbreak needed. There is no mention whether the GPP SIM will work with other carrier-locked iPhones as well.

Facebook: Accounts verifications and Timeline brands

17 Feb

Facebook

Facebook is rolling out a new system to verify user accounts that will allow some users to use nicknames. Since Facebook at its core is looking for your personal information, it has always wanted you to use your real name unless you are a big star such as Lady Gaga. Facebook is positioning this account verification as a way to ensure that people do not subscribe to an imposter who might be trying to impersonate someone on Facebook.

Facebook WARNING!
By verifying an account, the users will get more prominent placement in the Facebook “People to Subscribe to” suggestions. Techcrunch reports that starting today people with many subscribers will start being notified of the option to verify their account by uploading their government supplied ID. The person real name, if they go by a pseudonym, will still be listed on the about page. Apparently, each verified account will be processed manualy
